Discover the storied past of Arizona’s frontier at Fort Verde State Historic Park, located in Camp Verde. This well-preserved military post provides a window into the late 19th century when it served as a base for General George Crook’s U.S. Army scouts and soldiers during the Indian Wars. From 1865 to 1891, the fort was home to officers, enlisted men, families, and doctors.

Wander the parade grounds where soldiers once drilled, or stand in the shade of the officer’s quarters and imagine life in a rugged and rapidly changing territory. Periodically, living history programs take place, offering a time-travel-like glimpse into daily life on the frontier. The Visitor Center, housed in the former Administration Building, has exhibits on military routines, the role of Indian Scouts, and a special display honoring the Buffalo Soldiers.
