Cottonwood to Sedona is a short, awe-inspiring drive where towering red rock formations, a flourishing arts community, and world-renowned vortex sites await. About 20 miles from Cottonwood, it’s one of the easiest day trips in the Verde Valley. Take Highway 89A, known for its dramatic scenery, directly into the city as Sedona’s red-rock landscape comes into view.

Cottonwood is a great hub for exploring iconic Sedona attractions like the Chapel of the Holy Cross, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village, Devil’s Bridge, Red Rock State Park, Slide Rock State Park, and Airport Mesa. Afterward, head back to Cottonwood for an afternoon of wine tasting, boutique-hopping, and dining in Old Town. It’s the best of both worlds!

Tips for Visiting Sedona from Cottonwood

Go early. Trails and parking lots often begin to fill between 9 and 10 a.m., so arrive earlier for smaller crowds, easier parking, and cooler temperatures in the warmer months. 

Know if you need a pass. Parking at many popular Coconino National Forest trailheads and day-use areas requires a Red Rock Pass. An America the Beautiful Pass can also be used at several Sedona attractions. Red Rock Passes are sold at self-service kiosks at participating sites, the Sedona Chamber of Commerce, and the Red Rock Ranger Visitor Center.

Consider leaving the car in Cottonwood. The Verde Shuttle connects central Cottonwood with West Sedona, Uptown Sedona, and northern portions of SR 179, with hop-on, hop-off service within Sedona.

Check the weather. Arizona temperatures can rise quickly, so plan outdoor activities with the day’s conditions in mind. Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and snacks if you’re planning to hike or spend the day exploring outdoors. During the cooler months, wear a jacket and dress in layers, as temperatures can remain cold all day or warm up in the afternoon.
